Almanac is pleased to host Beyond the Standard Model: an evening of alternative text and performance organised by students of Goldsmiths MFA Fine Art department. In 1915 the theory of relativity held fast as the foundation for defining space-time. Yet by 1930, German scientists are rumoured to have uncovered mechanisms to induce anti-gravitational effects, produce torsion fields faster than the speed of light and decrease the weight of an object through gyroscopic action.

Beyond the Standard Model has come to epitomise thinking outside the conventions of paradigmatic doctrine; to account for what lie outside of conformist understanding. Students of the Goldsmiths MFA Fine Art department have appropriated this format and applied it to the mechanics of writing to bring you a one day event of performed text, spoken word, artists manifesto’s, sculpture and film.

The increasing ease with which one can engorge on clickbait news, gossip and social media feeds has dramatically altered the considerations of text as both a nuanced creative medium and a de-hierarchized platform of collective thought. The artists involved intend to reconsider the politics of writing as a delivery system inside techno-capitalist society with focus on bridging the schism between creative writing and global communication.

However, writing as political apparatus embeds itself within culture as the means to uphold the certainty of oneself as a cognate subject of governmentality. The artists presenting have each tasked themselves with questioning writing’s potential inside this framework, as a mediator of change and the capacitor for new relativities. Intentions through the works presented include: Text as a tool to counteract agencies of truth; Text and gender performance; Human relations with text-based technology; Subjugating third-person-effects and text as a proponent of embodied thought.
