Liliana Moro
né in cielo né in terra18 April—18 May 2018
Opening: 17 April, 6pm
Almanac presents né in cielo né in terra, the first solo exhibition in the UK by Italian artist Liliana Moro.
The title indicates a lack of sense or meaning, literally “neither in the sky nor on earth”. A void, central in the show, defined by the immersion into a moment of solitude, where a subject faces itself. Emptiness is filled by echoes of the subject’s consciousness, reflecting its precariousness and finitude through the exchanges and interactions with its environment - an outside that carries inner worlds.
Moro’s research explores the relations between interior and exterior, the fragility and ambiguity of their boundaries, which outline the territories of individual experience and identity politics, inviting us to go beyond the visible.
A silence becomes the projection of a lost object, of love or desire. Pervading melancholic landscapes, it submerges us in the passing of time. Feeling an intimate temporality moved by the flow of events that overwhelms our singularities.
A new series of photographs depicts a gaze towards the horizon, transporting us into an immensity and the memories of passed moments. By looking ahead of us and reminding us our transient and human nature, the gaze is reversed inwards - towards our intimate sphere.
A street lamp hangs solitary and upside-down, lighting the earth. Twisting ordinary bonds of signification, its presence implies a vision, bringing a different awareness of our position as viewers and subjects.
