13 May 2018
London
To coincide with the current and forthcoming programme at Almanac, Jo Harrison will be leading a monthly reading group session + discussion (no preparatory reading necessary)
Sunday 13th May
Sunday 10th June
Sunday 8th July
2-4pm at Almanac, London
For the first session, the central focus will be inspired by the current Liliana Moro exhibition, Né in Cielo, Né in Terra, and consider the idea of suspension: What happens when we allow ourselves to be truly present; when we let ourselves hang out in that awkward moment in-between – after one experience ends but before another begins? And how might it feel to simply experience that space or gap or void, and be open to the conflicts, anxieties and ambiguities of this form of freedom?
Using excerpts from Erich Fromm's The Fear of Freedom (1941) and/or The Art of Loving (1956), and a short extract from Marion Milner's An Experiment in Leisure (1937) as a departure point for discussion to think about freedom in both existential and economic terms, within and across the public and private. Considering how we spend our time, and if it is ever really our own? And if we ever do have moments of true, independent freedom, why do we often fear it? Why is it so intimidating or intense? How does isolation make us feel, and is it the same as alienation? And in light of all this, what then becomes of an individual's relationship to themselves?
The event is supported by Arts Council England Grants for the Arts
