Screening and Conversation between Riar Rizaldi and An Tairan09 November 2024
Turin
h. 18, at Cinema Massimo, via Giuseppe Verdi 18, Torino
One of Indonesia’s most active volcanoes, Mount Merapi, becomes the epicenter for different points of view in this work of hybrid docu-fiction by artist and filmmaker Riar Rizaldi (b.1990, Indonesia). Mixing eco-horror, ethnography, and investigative drama, Rizaldi’s cinematic narrative explores the myriad relationships that exist between the volcano and those who live and work at its foothills. Featuring a screenplay co-written with a volcanologist, a sand miner, and a shaman, the film distinguishes itself through its dedication to collaborative engagement, dismantling hierarchies between knowledge and belief. Mount Merapi becomes an active participant, even a protagonist, in a multi-voiced narrative in which a volcanic eruption represents imminent death for some and a new beginning for others.
The screening will be followed by a conversation between the director and An Tairan, researcher at the Princeton University School of Architecture, whose work focuses on the intersection between architecture and scientific observation of nature.
Free entry. No booking required.
The conversation will be in english.
The event is part of Vibrant Natures. On Telluric Cosmologies, a program curated by Guido Santandrea e Marianna Vecellio, organized in partnership between Almanac, Castello di Rivoli Museo d'Arte Contemporanea, and Orti Generali.
